St Stephen's Day School was founded in 1956, by the late Ann Catherine May, whose husband, the Rev. O. Worth May, was rector at that time. May worked with Nancy Pat Lewis-Smith and June Watts, who later served as directors, to develop curriculum and open the school. The school was housed the first three years in a house on Virginia and Ellison streets with donated furnishings. Teachers paid for workbooks and the county school board donated used textbooks. We offered a Kindergarten program and no public school Kindergartens were offered at that time. The school was moved for one year to the basement of the church building on Virginia Street. About 1960, the school moved to its current location in the educational building adjacent to the church. Past directors include, Margaret Ann George, Sharon Scherer, Debbie Short and Langhorne Abrams, who served with Short as co-director 1981-83 and became the single director in 1984. Langhorne so wonderfully served as director through July 2014, when she decided to step down for her final year of teaching to allow new director, Leah Evans to transition into the position as Langhorne approaches retirement in May 2015. Her hard work and dedication is so appreciated as she poured her heart and soul into making St. Stephen's Day School the wonderful program it is today, with three programs offered- Playgroup, 3 year old Preschool & 4 year old Preschool. After Lean Evan's tenure as director, Stacie Evans is our current director, beginning June 1, 2020.
